Year 6

In Year 6 there are two classes, Class M ( Miss Collins) and Class N (Miss Gawor).

Support Staff: Mrs Prescott and Mrs O'Donnell

This is your final year in Primary school and during this year we do many exciting things, that will hopefully create wonderful memories!

We start the year exploring many things as we learn about Britain Since the 1930's. You will experience life through the war years and hear the stories of those who lived through these times. You will be able to demonstrate how much you have learnt in your own special topic project.

The winter term offers the memorable adventure of a weeks residential trip.  This is a fabulous journey where we work together to ensure everyone challenges themselves to complete a variety of challenging activities. You'll be surprised what you can do with a bit of professional instruction and the encouragement of your friends!

Throughout the year we extend our learning through drama days, off site visits and we also celebrate as classes during our class masses and assemblies.

Of course the culmination of your many years at St. Mary's will be the summer production. I bet you can't wait to find out what you will be performing!  Each production has its own character and will give you the opportunity to show your various talents.

Curriculum Overview y6

Welcome back Y6

May 2018

We have been very busy in Year Six revising hard for our SATS. However we have found time to complete our Spy Gadgets inspired by Alex Rider in Stormbreaker. We designed our gadgets and assembled them using junk before coating them in mod rock. Finally we brought them to life using coloured acrylic paint and accessorising. Can you guess what gadgets we made?

Kent Life

We visited Kent Life in Maidstone where we were transported back to the 1940s to experience life as a child of war. We all came to school dressed as evacuees and waved our parents off as if we were really leaving London behind for the countryside.

While at Kent Life, we experienced different aspects of World War Two through interactive workshops and demonstrations. We learnt how to march properly with the Home Guard; how Britain used navigation to track enemy aircraft; we made rag rugs as part of the ‘Make Do and Mend’ campaign; as well a tour of a real 1940s house.

We really enjoyed all the activities and experiencing history in a different way. We came home having learnt far more about the efforts our country made during the war year .

Year Six Class Mass

Year Six celebrated mass with Fr. John, the Sisters of Mercy and some of our community in the Convent. This year Fr. John has encouraged the school to be more creative with their masses, so Year Six decided to dramatise the story of Daniel of the Lions. Children performed a short drama incorporating the whole class which helped them unpick the message behind the reading; that it is importance to have faith in God!

The children were reverent throughout the mass and were very confident with their mass responses.

Well done Year Six!

Year Six Visit to Thomas Philipot's Almshouse.

Over the last week, Class M and N had the privilege of visiting Thomas Philipot's Almshouse behind Eltham High Street.

After a brisk walk from St Mary's, we were invited into the common room and children were given the opportunity to ask questions about their experiences of Evacuation during World War II. The residents were able to share their feelings about being sent away from their family at such a young age. Both the children and the former evacuees enjoyed their time together; the residents commented on how well behaved our children were.

A special thanks must go to Sharon and Mr Jackson for helping organise the event.
